Description
Fronius believes in 24 hours of sun – a future with 100% renewable energy. In this energy future hydrogen plays a central role, as a sustainable alternative to fossils fuels and a seasonal storage for renewable energy. Thus, we have been researching the topic since 2002.
With SOLH2UB – a system for producing, storing, distributing and re-electrifying green hydrogen – we are now working on a sustainable solution for mobility as well as energy supply in municipalities and for businesses, like energy communities, logistic companies or agriculture.
SOLH2UB is the first in-house hub with green hydrogen in Austria. The decentralized hub at our R&D facility in Thalheim / Upper Austria, can use photovoltaic excess energy to produce green hydrogen with PEM electrolysis. By means of electrolysis, green hydrogen is produced from water and solar power. It is stored and can be used for fueling fuel cell electric driven vehicles (FCEV). The only emission of those vehicles is water. The hydrogen can also be stored seasonally and transferred back to electricity and heat by the entailed fuel cell.
We are convinced that this technology has a big potential to be used as a “green energy carrier”. Furthermore, it supports grid stability as it takes excess energy from renewables and thereby allows the innovative integration of the sectors electricity, mobility and heating. This is an important step towards our vision of 24 hours of sun and for supporting the energy transition.
