Description
HYBRIT is short for Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology. It is a joint venture between steel company SSAB, mining company LKAB and energy company Vattenfall. The aim is to replace coal with hydrogen in the steelmaking process. HYBRIT is a ground-breaking effort to reduce CO2-emissions and decarbonise the steel industry. After a successful pre-study, the project is currently in a pilot phase and the plan is to proceed to a demonstration phase 2025-2035. The goal is a commercially viable technology for fossil-free steelmaking in 2035.
